Right to Know Day 2020

Today is International Right to Know Day, kicking off Canada’s Right to Know Week celebrations which will take place from Sept. 28 – Oct. 4, 2020.  This will be the 15^th year Canada has celebrated Right to Know Week.

Right to Know Day began in Bulgaria in 2002 following a meeting of the International Freedom of Information Advocates Network (FOIAnet), a global coalition made up of 15 countries. Today, FOIAnet’s membership includes over 200 organizations and civil groups from around the world.  The purpose of this Network is to collaborate to promote individual rights to access information, and to encourage open and transparent governance.  In 2015, UNESCO declared September 28^th as “International Day for Universal Access to Information”.

This week the Public Service Information Community Connection (PSICC) will be hosting a virtual conference in recognition of Right to Know Week.  This conference will provide a forum for discussions about access to information issues currently present in Canada as well as offer information sessions, plenary panels, and networking opportunities.
